Abstract

Super-intensive shrimp farming (STC) is increasingly expanding in Bac Lieu province, one of the capitals of the shrimp farming industry in the country, leading to a transition between intensive and semi-intensive shrimp farming models (TC-BTC) to Super-intensive shrimp model (STC). These are saltwater and brackish shrimp farming models that have major impacts on the water environment of Bac Lieu province. The objective of this paper is: Comparative assessment of environmental quality of wastewater and sludge generated between STC and TC-BTC farming shrimp models in Bac Lieu province and environmental management of the two models based on the results of sampling analysis at 120 establishments (STC: 60; TC-BTC: 60) and combined with survey and information collection by questionnaires at 286 shrimp farming establishments/households in 5 districts , town, city of Bac Lieu province. The results show that: (1) The concentration of wastewater quality parameters in shrimp ponds of TC-BTC model is higher than that of STC model. The statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) between the two models is expressed in pH and TSS parameters; (2) The accumulation of organic and inorganic matter in STC pond sludge at parameters T-N, T-P, TOC is higher than that of TC-BTC, shown at the 75th percentile value, but not many and not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Statistically significant differences in the two models are expressed in the indicators of Salinity and As; and (3) Regarding environmental management of pond water, there is a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) between the two models, in which the percentage of households with pond bottom sewage discharge point, the percentage of households with pond wastewater treatment and recycling and reuse of pond water in the STC model are significantly higher than in the TC-BTC model. Therefore, the trend of switching from TC-BTC shrimp farming model to high-tech STC model should be encouraged to develop in Bac Lieu province on the basis of sustainable development between economic and environmental benefits. school.
