THE EFFECTS OF LEARNING EXPERIENCE ON THE LEARNING OUTCOMES OF FIRST- YEAR STUDENTS OF INDUSTRIAL UNIVERSITY OF HO CHI MINH CITY

Abstract

The study measured the level of effects of first-year students’ learning experience on the outcomes they achieved in the first academic year at Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh city (IUH). This is a comparatively new topic in the research into Vietnamese higher education. Data collected from the survey responses of 898 IUH first-year students indicated that learning experience, overall, had positive effects on learning outcomes including the development of knowledge, skills and personality; grades; satisfaction and sense of belonging of IUH first-year students. The factors that had impacts on most of the outcomes included students’ academic effort, institutional support given to students in learning and life, and the quality of the relationships between students and other IUH members. The other factors, except for “Group Work”, had effects on at least one outcome. However, the interaction between students and lecturers had negative influence on student satisfaction.
