MARKET POWER STUDY OF COMMERCIAL BANKS IN ASEAN

Abstract
This research examines factors that potentially affect the market power of the commercial banks in the ASEAN. Our data include 118 ASEAN banks from Bankscope during the period from 2002-2017. We use HHIAsset, HHIDeposit and Lerner index to measure bank market power. Employing panel data analysis, we find that thepower market of the commercial banks in ASEAN is quite high. We also find that other factors significantly affect the banks’ market power including the equity ratio, size, the ratio of non-interest income, the ratio of deposits, state ownership, the ratio of banking sectorassets, the ratio market capitalization, asset growth, inflation, GDP growth, and crisis finance. In addition, industry-specific factors, macroeconomic factors, and the 2008 financial crisis also significantly affected market power banking.
