Abstract

The article presents the results of the research the visual symbol of the masks in Vietnamese opera characters from late 19th and early 20th century that the actors and actresses were used to making in this perious of time in order to play the roles. The approach of the visual symbol in Vietnamese opera theater art is based on the visual principles of the visual fundamental subject. Specifically, the visual symbol of the characters in Vietnamese opera theater art will be analyzed, disassembled into elements such as: lay-outs, strokes, shapes, chroma (lightness of color), colors and motifs,etc. After that, conclusions are sumarized about specific characteristics of the representation of colors, motifs, etc. of the visual symbol of masks in Vietnamese opera theater art in this brilliant period.
